Item Description

Superlative mounded small cabinet of tightly intergrown tabular hematite crystals from the old extinct small iron mines in the Saphoz area. The highly lustrous metallic-gray crystals, to 2.0 cm, are dramatically accented with tiny sparkly specular hematite crystals. The old iron mines were intermittently worked from the late 18th to early 20th centuries. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 10405 and purchased at the shop of well-known Paris dealer Deyolle in May, 1984. Kay was a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). She passed away in 2020. This exceptional piece probably dates to specimens recovered between 1962 and 1970 during prospecting and mineralogical study of the mines.
