Item Description

Some of the world's finest and most unusual hematite specimens come from the famous mines of the Kalahari manganese field. This exceptional large piece comes from the Wessels Mine. Absolutely splendent, sharp, tapered crystals are aesthetically set on the sculptural large matrix dramatically accented with scintillating tiny hematite crystals. Crystal forms include the striking, 1.2 cm, blocky tapered crystal with the unusual pinacoidal termination (it looks like a snub-nosed bullet), crystals with a scalenohedral habit and blocky sharply terminated crystals. This outstanding large piece is from the major 2005 find, which produced truly fantastic, world-class specimens. Ex Rolando Collection # 1622 and Bedogne Collection # 1157. Dr. Bedogne, 1942-2012, was a well-known Italian mineralogist, prolific author, field collector and collector. Read his biography in the Mineralogical Record Biographical Archive: http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=118. Valued at $2500.
