Item Description

The Payun Volcano locality, which lies just outside of Patagonia in southern Argentina, is famous for producing these remarkable pseudomorphs of Hematite after Magnetite. Sporadically over the last 20 years or so, these unique and attractive specimens have trickled out of this area and continue to surprise us with the gorgeous forms and geometric shapes. The Hematite has replaced the stunning sculptural form of the original octahedral Magnetite crystals. The largest crystal measures 1.5 cm long. This eye-catching specimen has good luster, impressive, razor-sharp, faces and a beautiful metallic silvery-grey hue on the surface. A slight iridescence can be seen here and there, giving the piece just a hint of color. No major damage anywhere, though one crystal has a partially incomplete growth that has been recrystallized ("re-healed") over the surface.
