Item Description

The Lake George area of Colorado is best known for producing some of the most magnificent Amazonite specimens in the world. There aren't many species associated with the Amazonite, mostly Quartz, Albite, Fluorite and sometimes Hematite. The majority of the Hematite specimens from the Lake George area are often found as pseuomorphs after Siderite. This particular specimen is a notably large and remarkably sharp single rhombic crystal of Siderite which has been completely replaced/pseudomorphed by silvery-black Hematite. The reverse side of the piece is actually hollow, and is lined with golden-brown spherical groups of Goethite. The combination of the two iron oxide species together makes for a colorful and unique specimen. I had a lot of fun inpsecting the small cavities on the back of the piece, which are a wonderful contrast from the smooth geometric form on the front of the piece. I haven't seen many pseudomorphs this size from the area, and the piece is in great shape, though not complete damage free, as there is a contact on one corner. The specimen was collected by Richard Kosnar in the Summer of 1975. A very attractive, and hard to find Hematite pseudomorph from this historic area in Colorado. Valued at $650.
