Item Description

Hummerite is a very rare hydrated potassium magnesium vanadate (or vanadium oxide depending on who you read) that dates back to 1951, when it was approved and named after the type locality, the Hummer Mine in western Colorado, near the Utah border. The piece features classic, brilliant yellow-orange colored micro crystals on host rock matrix. These specimens were all mined out 50+ years ago, and will never be found again as the mine is completely defunct. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011. The piece is also accompanied by a label from the collection of Arthur L. Flagg (#4699).
