Item Description

A VERY rarely seen Moonstone specimen from the high Alps of Austria. The Mörchnerkar locality has produced some iconic Alpine mineral specimens, including some of the most beautiful Amethyst scepters from any European locality. This piece is a classic and very rarely seen example of Moonstone (a variety of Adularia Feldspar) featuring thick, blocky, pale golden colored crystal with attractive surface etching. When the piece rotated in the light, one can see the classic "adularescence" effect, which causes a milky blue sheen to appear on the surface . Moonstone shows a silvery or bluish iridescence, that is caused by the intergrowth of two different types of Feldspar with different refractive indexes. Perhaps the most important aspect to the piece is the fact that the crystal is rather large and sharp compared to most I've seen from any world locality. If you're a Feldspar collector, or if you're interest in unusual gem crystals, do not pass this one up. From the private collection (not dealer inventory) of Herb Obodda (#3709).
