Item Description

A rarely seen specimen of Kyanite from Yancey County, North Carolina. The label unfortunately did not give a more specific locality, but it resembles pieces I've seen from the Celo Mountain Mine. With that said, the piece is essentially a solid group of sharp, prismatic, fairly lustrous, blue to off-blue colored crystals measuring up to 4.7 cm long. The crystals are tightly intergrown, but individual crystals can be spotted with ease. A small amount of attached feldpsar can be seen on the side of the specimen. It's more of a reference piece than anything as most of the crystals have some kind of contact or imperfection. It's still a rarely seen Kyanite from this remote part of western North Carolina which is actually home to Mount Mitchell, the tallest mountain in the eastern United States at 6,684 feet .
