Item Description

An impressive, rich and RARE large almandine garnet specimen from Custer County, South Dakota. Almandine specimens are very uncommon from the 10 localities, that MINDAT lists for the county. Sharp, lustrous, translucent to gemmy, orangy-brown dodecahedrons, to 3 mm, are peppered on all sides of the large striated waxy luster mottled gray and brown schist matrix plate. This is a RARE, large and important old-time example of the species and locale. Ex Paterson Museum Collection, where it was formerly on display.
