Item Description

Classic, sharp, rare and sculptural large calcite from the Galena, Kansas Picher Field portion of the historic Tri-State District. The gemmy, transparent to translucent, subtlely twinned amber crystal has striking unusual form with the tapered chisel termination. The dramatic etched surfaces on the moderately lustrous prism faces add real pizzazz to this excellent 360-degree calcite. Formerly in the Ernest Chapman Collection, a well-known California collector who passed away in 1947. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 3244 and acquired from itinerant California dealer, Burton Jirgl, in the early-mid 1960s. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). Calcite is RARE from Galena, and this is a very fine large crystal.
