Item Description

A HUGE and impressive old-time garnet crystal from an unknown Australia locale and the Paterson Museum Collection. The sharp, classic textbook dodecahedron is a mottled reddish-brown and has high luster. Scattered areas of cherry-red translucence are noted, mainly along the edges. We believe this to be a rare large almandine garnet, due to the coloration and crystal form. A dramatic complete all-around 360-degree large crystal in great shape. The bit of noted edge wear has minimal impact to the high quality of this outstanding large garnet. The piece is possibly from the Triple Chance Mine pegmatite, near the famed Broken Hill deposit. OLD-TIME Paterson material dating to circa 1900. The numbers match to the label. An important large Australian garnet! Mass is 1744 grams or 3.8 pounds.
