Item Description

Sodalite variety Hackmanite specimens are RARE from the famous Lovozero Massif, an unusual alkaline igneous intrusion with numerous rare species. Hackmanite is the rare pink to grey white to white variety of sodalite containing some Sulfur. The large sawed slab, which is polished and sprayed on one side, contains two large pods of translucent gray-white hackmanite. The hackmanite fluoresces rich orange under LW UV light and moderate pinkish-red under SW UV light. Hackmanite can also be Tenebrescent, also known as reversible photochromism, is the ability of minerals to change colour when exposed to sunlight. The effect can be repeated indefinitely, but is destroyed by heating. Tenebrescent minerals include hackmanite, spodumene and tugtupite. A VERY RARE and rich large example of this unusual species from the David Burgess Collection, for whom Burgessite is named.
