Item Description

Larimar is the commercial name that is used for these natural blue (untreated) Pectolite gems from the Filipinas Larimar Mine. These beautiful and unique blue gems from the Dominican Republic are not only singular in their appearance, they are truly distinctive in the gem world. The actual name "Larimar" is a combination of "Larissa", which was the name of the daughter of Dominican geologist, Miguel Mendez who originally named the material, and "Mar", which is the Spanish word for sea, as it resembles the crystal blue Caribbean Sea. The material is typically massive and opaque, but sometimes you will slightly translucent material. It's important to note that Pectolite is typically a white or off-white hue from most localities, and BLUE is an exceptionally rare color for the species, and though I haven't seen any actual analysis, I believe that the color is due to copper content. These amazing stones are only found in one place in the world, and they are becoming increasingly more popular among collectors, jewelers and dealers due to their durability and alluring color. Here we have an attractive Larimar gem with a "Freeform Cabochon" cut and a beautiful blue and white color combination. I've seen stones of this quality priced at $50 per carat recently at shows, so don't miss out on getting your hands on a fine example of this wonderfully colorful and special material that is only found in one place on earth.
