Item Description

NOTE : Kay's old label was wrong - people at the time got localities mixed up, and this is from the MUCH more rare type locale, not from the later finds at Mapimi....A superb, 1.5 cm, pristine radial spray of gemmy, terminated golden-yellow legrandite prisms is aesthetically set in a sculptural protective vug of dense gossan matrix on this outstanding small cabinet from famed Mina Ojuela. The glorious prisms have have glassy sides and frosted terminations. Most legrandite crystal clusters have contacted terminations, so to find a specimen of this quality is truly rare and desirable. This is a Holy Grail species from the famed 1960s-70s finds at Ojuela - and few ever see these older examples, from the type locality (distinct crystal habit). Early Legrandite from the Kay Robertson Collection # 6105 and acquired from the Lidstrom's at Tucson in February, 1970. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). Good legrandite specimens are seldom seen on the market. Especially matrix specimens with pristine terminated crystals. This remarkable piece has two fine display views. Valued at $1500 for unique quality.
