Item Description

Specimens from the three magnesite quarries listed by MINDAT on this Greek island are rare, indeed. This is a solid hefty chunk of massive, earthy, ivory-colored magnesite. The Foote label dates from about 1900. Negropont is a Middle Ages name for Evvia Island. From a musuem collection. The Foote label is from the Warren Foote era, not the A. E. Foote era. This dates the specimen to some time after 1895. "A. E." was dropped

from the labels when Warren took over the business after his father's death in 1895
