Item Description

Barrel-shaped mimetite variety camplylite specimens are a highly desirable English classic from the historic Dry Gill Gill Mine at Caldbeck Fells. Highly lustrous, partially translucent, rounded orange-brown crystals with striking yellow stripes cover the quartz matrix on this very fine and rich specimen. The crystals reach 8 mm. Psilomelane (black manganese oxides on the back) are a typical accessory. Lead mining effectively ceased in Caldbeck Fells by the 1880s, with only a few specimens found since, so this is probably a real old-timer. Ex Earl Calvert Collection (1904-1964), a prominent California collector. Valued at $1000 for high quality and richness.
