Item Description

"Oakstone" stalactitic baryte is a RARE and highly desirable old-time English species found in only two localities in Derbyshire. It is a pseudostalactitic banded variety of crystalline barite, so named for the obvious resemblance to the tree rings of local oak trees. This polished slice has exceptional form accented by the secondary growth of bladed barite. Newhaven is just south of the locality. This classic and very fine old-time specimen certainly dates to prior to World War I and could be much older. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 11976. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record).
