Opal Replacing Petrified Wood (Limb Cast)

Here we have a classic example of the famous pieces of Precious Opal replacing Petrified Wood from the renowned locality at Virgin Valley, Nevada. This piece shows the preserved form of the tree (called a limb cast) which have been replaced by white Crystal Opal, along with tiny areas with highly colorful flashes of red, gold, orange, yellow and blue. The Opal needs a strong light to show off the color, but it's really pretty when viewed up close. This material is nearly impossible to obtain these days, and is very worthwhile for collectors because it's not just a mineral specimen, nor a gem specimen nor a fossil, but a combination of all three.
