Item Description

A classic specimen of beautifully preserved petrified / agatized wood from the famous Petrified Forest in Arizona. Now this area was not a National Park until 1962, so the piece was almost certainly collected prior to this point in time. This specimen comes from the collection of Willard W. Wulff (1904-1998) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a prominent figure and collector of Colorado minerals. Wulff was one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society in 1936. You can read Willard's bio on the Mineralogical Record website here ( http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1528 ). The piece comes with a typed label from Wulff on one of his famous 3x5 index cards that states the piece was part of a set of three pieces, but when we acquired the collection, this was the only specimen left. It has a VERY low number (169B), which means it easily dates back at least 70 years The piece shows fantastic form as the polished front face displays the gorgeous swirling red and blue coloration and a complete outer "rind" on the upper side (incomplete on the bottom side). It's a hefty and thick specimen of this material, and certainly worth picking up if you collect Arizona material, fossils, agates or historic pieces from the United States! PLEASE NOTE: This specimen weighs 1.3 kilos (2.85 pounds), so there will be an additional shipping charge, please keep this in mind when bidding. Valued at $650.
