Rock Currier loved the classics and rare species, and always picked up new examples of new finds that, in some way, surpassed the old classics from Europe that he grew up with in museums and collections. As so often these last years from the mid 1990s til now, CHINA smacked down older examples of many species from classic old locations (mostly European)! And this is such a case, where the plumbo's coming out of China were 100 times the quality and 1000 times the quantity of anything from old England of the mid 1800s, for this species. For gorgeous blue color, style, and composition, it has intellectual interest. Still, most were rather ugly as display specimens....until China. This piece is from an earlier find at Yangshuo, near our own office in Guilin in Southern China (Guangxi region). We were among the first to bring these to market in this form and style. This specimen, I exchanged to Rock in 2015. It is a gorgeous large plate with rolling botryoidal plumbogummite of highest quality. Unusually it also has a bit of translucency. Few were perfect in that size and so it is nearly pristine, with just a few small damaged bits around the periphery. Valued $2000+ for color and translucency in this quality.
