Item Description

Fine calcite and prehnite specimens, such as this large piece are quite rare from this historic old Trap Rock quarry, which according to MINDAT, was mined out in circa 1907. Sharp, glassy, transparent to translucent, coloress calcite scalenohedrons to 3.0 cm are attractively set on the curved basalt crust lined with frosted, translucent, straw-yellow prehnite crystals. The large 20.0 x 12.0 cm paper label from the American Muesum indicates the piece was from the Papke Collection and was collected in about 1910. The numbers match on the label and on the back of the piece. Ex Herb Obodda dealer stock and valued by Herb at $400, five or more years ago. Historic and rare old-time New Jersey combination material. Faint pink fluorescence on the calcite.
