Item Description

The Lower New Street Quarry is one of the most famous old trap rock localities in New Jersey dating back to 1900. It has produced some of the finest Prehnite specimens from any trap rock quarry in the state. A few yaers ago, some very exciting, unique and impressive Prehnites were discovered in the area around the old quarry. This piece was collected in the summer of 2011. The appeal of these specimens is three-fold. First, the individual crystals comprising each "ball" of Prehnite are incredibly distinct, well-formed and eye-catching for the locality. Secondly, the "wet" luster is superb, as good as anything I've seen in Jersey Prehnite. Lastly, and most importantly, the Prehnites are incredibly gemmy(!) and look beautiful when backlit. Strangely, these Prehnites seems to have formed a "crust" on a now missing (decomposed?) matrix, making them nearly "floater" specimens. This piece is crystallized on the front and back, and has a bit of attached white Albite(?) for a nice touch.
