Item Description

A handwritten Carl Bosch label comes with this classic old pyrargyrite specimen from the historic mines at Jachymov (St Joachimsthal) on the Czech side of the famed Erzgebirge. Sharp, lustrous, metallic tabular crystals, to 1.4 cm, are scattered on the matrix plate. The large broken crystal on one edge is also 1.4 cm wide. Bright light reveals the classic "ruby silver" color of the crystals. This fine old-timer has a super provenance. It was formerly in the collection of eminent German collector Carl Bosch (1874-1940) and was part of his 25,000 piece collection purchased by the Smithsonian in 1966. It comes with his label and a label from the Smithsonian. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 6610 and was acquired from the Lidstrom's at Tucson in February, 1972. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). Classic old pyrargyrite from the Carl Bosch Collection (inventor of the Bosch process for agriculture). A fun historic rarity with great provenance.
