Item Description

A RARE, rich and showy, large old-time quartz and calcite combination plate from the famous iron mines of Cumbria. Sparkly, glassy, dipyramidal quartz crystals are richly included with various hues of hematite and cover the undulating plate. Scattered clusters of elongated, hematite-tinted, nailhead spar calcite crystals are a super compliment. The style of the hematite-included quartz crystals and elongated calcite crystals appear to point the old iron mines of the Cleator Moor area and in particular, to the obscure Crowgarth Mine. This is the only mine in the MINDAT photo gallery with calcite crystals of this habit. From an East Coast collection and comes with a faded century-old label.
