Item Description

A RARE and striking old combination specimen from Japan. Quartz or chalcedony has coated an amazing sculptural 360-degree cluster of tightly intergrown marcasite stalactites. The stalactites are set in a wooden base. Bruising reveals the underlying marcasite. Probably from the well-known historic Oppu Mine, famous for Japan's finest rhodochrosite specimens. First opened in the late 1600s, this mine produced, silver, copper, lead, zinc, cadmium and finally rhodochrosite (MINDAT). Formerly in the Isamu Ito Collection, well-known Japanese author and collector. Ex Joe Lobell Collection. Extremely RARE and probably old combination material.
