Item Description
I am not a big fan of using trade names that are applied to new gems when they hit the market, but I was calling it what everybody else is calling it. It was said in some parts of the gem market that these stones are comprised of transparent to translucent colorless Quartz that are included by small, but extremely vibrant bluish Copper-bearing Tourmaline crystals. The material is found at Paraiba in Brazil where the most electric Tourmaline gems and crystals have ever been found. HOWEVER, the inclusions are outstanding examples of the very rare mineral GILALITE, never seen like this before in such quality. This particular stone is a simple "Oval Cabochon" cut Quartz gem included with some beautiful light blue Gilalite "banding" and an unknown tan oxide. This is unique material, and there much more exciting than most inclusion-collectible gems on the market today. The name Paraiba Quartz is just a reference to the color, not to the original location which is indeed near Paraiba in any case. Enjoy this beautiful rarity! GIA has an article in Gems & Gemology, called as Medusa Quartz with Gilalite inclusions, in the Fall 2005, Volume 41, issue 3. I think this is a very interesting find, and I'm told that the mine producing this amazing rarity is now finished. I was also told that it was also a very limited find (only a few kilograms), so it will be very hard to replace.
