Item Description

The famous Red Horn Coral locality in Riley's Canyon in northeastern Utah produces some of the most distinctive fossils of coral from anywhere in the world. They have a beautiful carmine red color, which is due to the fact that the coral was replaced by red chalcedony (presumably with some iron content). This material is well-known in the fossil world, but not readily available on the market anymore these days. This piece is a classic example of this beautiful material featuring a well-preserved columnar fossil of Horn Coral sitting within the surrounding host rock. The Horn Coral fossil measures 2.7 cm in diameter. A great example of these lovely fossils found about 40 miles east of Salt Lake City.
