Item Description

This is an excellent and fine quality piece of the well-known "red" Quartz specimens from the Orange River area. This piece features a pair of razor-sharp, textbook hexagonal crystals of Quartz with a stunning electric orange-red color. The crystals which are actually scepter overgrowths over an earlier generation of smoky grey Quartz. Obviously the crystals are coated / included with Hematite (or some other kind of iron oxide), to create the glowing color, and the effect is dazzling. The Orange River area is well known for these specimens, which started coming out in the early 2000s. The piece is in superb shape on the display side, as the crystals are pristine, but there is a separation mark on the back where another crystal once grew. A stellar example of these famous pieces from Namibia. This specimen is from the collection of Charlie Key, who is the most significant mineral dealer of the second half the 20th century, and has the rare honor of having TWO minerals named after him (Keyite and Ludlockite).
