Item Description

VERY RARE, old style rhodochrosite from the Hotazel Mine. Beautiful cherry-red, lustrous, translucent, slightly rounded, flattened rhodo rhombs form this striking "shield form" of botryoidal growth. The cherry-red rhodo dramatically lies atop an earlier generation of nubby pastel-pink botryoidal rhodochrosite on the starkly contrasting massive manganite ore matrix. The Hotazel Mine produced smaller quantities of typically more unusual rhodochrosite in the 1960s and 70s, prior to the superlative scalenohedral finds at the N'Chwaning I Mine in the late 1970s. Ex W.S. Logan Collection # X39-5. His label states this piece is from the N'Chwaning II Mine, but this unique form is undoubtedly from the Hotazel Mine. Valued at $2500 for great rarity and quality.
