An exceptionally fine gem Rhodochrosite from the often overlooked South African finds of the late 1970s and early 1980s, this is a historic stone. These gems are not the bright pink-red tone of the gems from Colorado or China but are an intense and more saturated hue of red. Purity of hue is all important here, these can get dark or overly brown. Not at all the case here with this stone: the color is just what you want - bright red that doesn't darken up in lower light. This one is bright and brilliant - just a slight touch of the characteristic haziness. Precision US cutting and a very respectable and approachable size as well. Extremely attractive stone from the "other" locale that is often forgotten today by collectors as they seek Colorado or Chinese material. Valued $1000-1500.
