Item Description

A very showy, rich and OLD-TIME large combination plate from the historic mines at Cavnic. A forest of glassy quartz points, to about 3.2 cm, is aesthetically accented with pretty clusters of bright flattened pastel-pink rhodochrosite rhombs. The crystals rest on a hefty matrix of banded rhodochrosite dramatically accented with a vein of mixed sulfides. Classic old combination material from the Kay Robertson Collection # 1435. She acquired the piece in the late 1950s or early 1960s from Scott Wiliams. Kay's label says Hungary, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire prior to World War I. The old paper German label confirms the date. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record).
