Item Description

A rich and rare old-time Colorado rhodochrosite combination specimen from this old, long extinct mine near Leadville and the famous Climax moly mine. Specimens of any type are rare from here. The front of the blocky matrix is richly covered with rose-pink rhombs and crystal sections, some with frosted faces. The largest rhomb is 8 mm and the largest crystal section is 1.1 cm. The blocky, hefty quartz-rich ore matrix hosts much more rhodochrosite with chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. The village of Alicante was abandoned by 1888. Our resident Ph.D mineralogist examined the piece with a microscope and did not see any Azurite. Ex Dean Martalock, Seaman Museum and W.S. Logan Collection # X91-1. Very rare and desirable old-time Colorado combination material.
