Item Description

A very hard to find specimen of excellent quality Scheelites on matrix from the Frisch Glück Mine (Herkules-Frisch Glück Mine) in the Erzgebirgskreis (Ore Mountains) of Saxony. This piece features many very sharp, lustrous, gemmy, unusually colorless, pseudo-octahedral crystals of Scheelite measuring up to 1.0 cm across, on matrix. Colorless or white Scheelite is rare in nature, and to find crystals like this which show good internal gemminess/translucency is an added bonus. A little bit of damage is visible, but most of the crystals are in fine shape. The crystal fluorescence a BRIGHT violet-white hue under shortwave ultraviolet light. This is the ONLY specimen we've ever had to offer from this VERY OLD locality that dates back to 1705 according to the listing on mindat.org. The mine has been a tourist attraction since 1926, so you can bet that this piece is well over 100 years old, and could easily date back to the early 1800s, as Scheelite was first discovered / named in 1821.
From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#528 D), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel. We at The Arkenstone have the privilege of offering the remainder of this great worldwide collection for the foreseeable future through our various platforms.
