Item Description

A rarely seen specimen of Canadian Schorl. This piece features sharp, well-formed, lustrous, prismatic, trigonal crystals of jet-black Schorl with individual crystals measuring up to 1.0 cm long sitting on Calcite matrix according to the label. Typically, the Schorls I've seen from Ontario are singles off matrix, or broken crystals on matrix, but this piece features several fine euhedral crystals, which is not common in my experience. The terminations show attractive first and second order pyramidal modifications, and look beautiful up close. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#649). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). Note: Mindat does not list schorl for this locality, but does list dravite.
