Item Description

A RARE and impressive schorl matrix specimen from Cahuilla Mountain, rather than more common such specimens from the Fano Mine at nearbly Little Cahuilla Mountain. A 5.5 cm highly lustrous jet-black schorl prism with an unusual frosted termination is dramatically set in the side of a sculptural mounded "tortoise shell" matrix of albite, muscovite and numerous striking projecting smoky quartz crystals. The schorl resembles the black neck of the tortoise. Ex Bob Reynolds Collection, a well-known fossil and mineral expert and Curator of the San Bernardino County Museum. He passed away in 2020. A fascinating and rare 360-degree biomorphic tortoise-shaped schorl combination from the locale.
