Item Description

A classic, old-time and showy specimen of beautifully burnished, leaflike silver plates richly embedded in calcite matrix and nicely accented with massive acanthite from the famous Silver Islet Mine of Lake Superior, Canada. The striking upright, 1.2 cm, platy/crystallized silver looks just like a rabbit on its hind legs with a drooping ear! Close examination of the rabbit shows that the leaf contains several embedded octahedrons. Silver of this quality, from this locality is seldom available and is always in demand. The mine was on a very small, low-lying island, just offshore, in Lake Superior and was active from 1869-1883. Periodic storms flooded the mine and swept much of the mine works away. Very sporadic exploration has taken place since then. Ex Robert Hauck Collection. It came through the noted John Durkos Collection to Bob. Previously, it had been in the Harold Buckelew Collection and then the Robert Hauck Collection, before coming to Durkos. So, Robert owned it twice! VERY RARE on the market and from an old locale
