Item Description

There are hundreds of localities for Smithsonite around the world, but when somebody mentions blue Smithsonite, most collectors immediately think of the famous Kelly Mine in New Mexico. This locality might arguably be the most well-known mine in the entire state, and produced some of the most outstanding specimens of the species extant. This piece features lustrous/vitreous, beautiful rich blue color (more of a green hue underneath) radiating aggregates of Smithsonite with very minor matrix. The piece has been sawn on the bottom, and two sides but it actually allows you to view the gorgeous flowing banded layers of Smithsonite when backlit (see photos). The bottom of the piece has an attached hand-written label that mentions the name L. Reiner. This is a super gemmy and richly colored specimen of this old classic material. For reference, I showed the piece to a gem/jeweler friend who said that the carving value of the specimen would easily be in the $5,000 range (200 grams x $25/gram - though I would never condone destroying a fine mineral specimen like this). A great quality display specimen of this highly sought after classic US material.
