Item Description
When most people think of minerals from Creede, one of the first things that comes to mind are the beautiful and fine quality Sphalerite specimens. These crystals are often very gemmy showing a range of colors from green to yellow to golden-brown, and for an added highlight they sometimes are associated with beautifully contrasting purple Amethyst. This cabinet display specimen is a great example of said material featuring many good quality, gemmy Sphalerites measuring up to 1.5 cm across which when backlit show a beautiful greenish-gold color which are sitting on attractive drusy Amethyst on host rock matrix. There are some contacts here and there, so the piece isn't 100% perfect, but this material is not easy to find on the market, and this specimen is a still a very nice representation of these beautiful pieces from Creede. Keep in mind that Sphalerite, unlike virtually all other sulfides can be transparent, so to have GEMMY crystals like this of a mineral that by all rights should not be gem quality is a big deal. From the collection of Gary Weaver of Prescott, Arizona (1944-2019). Gary was an electrical engineer who worked for many years for Hughes Aircraft in California.
