Item Description

When it comes to Spinel, nothing tops beautiful ruby color from Myanmar. For reference, Ruby in Myanmar includes red and pink hues, and this stone is what the locals would call a "Ruby Spinel". In fact, the term "Ruby Spinel" is derived from the fact that the Black Prince's Ruby in Crown Jewels of England is actually a Spinel! The stone was long thought to be a blood red Ruby when in fact it was discovered to be a gigantic Spinel that is estimated to weigh over 170 carats!! This stone exhibits a bright reddish-pink color with a "Round Brilliant" cut and virtually eye-clean clarity. It is difficult to find superb quality Spinels because of political upheaval in Myanmar, and all of Mogok is shut down, so there is no mining taking place. It appears that these stones will soon be very very hard to come across and the days of the good Ruby Spinels may be dwindling. Even if mining resumes again in Mogok, it's almost certain that the prices will be higher than they were a few years ago.
