Item Description

A lovely toenail sized specimen of the famous electric yellow colored Sulfur crystals from Sicily, Italy. The piece hosts a few excellent sharp, well-formed, glowing yellow color crystals of Sulfur measuring up to 1.8 cm, free of matrix. The Sulfur crystals are very gemmy when backlit. Minor roughness in spots, but overall in very good shape. A beautiful piece of what are certainly the most classic examples of Sulfur ever found. For reference, this species should be spelled S-U-L-F-U-R (not sulphur) as both the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry along with the British Royal Society of Chemistry adopted this spelling in the 1990s (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfur#Spelling_and_etymology). Wikipedia also states that, "Sulfur is derived from the Latin word sulpur, which was Hellenized to sulphur in the erroneous belief that the Latin word came from Greek." This piece is from the collection of Chris and Agatha Galas, and was pictured on page 106 in the 2017 issue of the Mineralogical Record featuring Mineral Collections in California. The caption says the piece measures 4 cm, but it's really only 3.1 cm at its longest dimension when we measured it.
