Item Description

This is a great small cabinet sized specimen of the famous, classic electric yellow colored Sulfur crystals from Agrigento, Sicily, Italy. The main focus of this specimen is the superb, sharp, well-formed, glowing yellow color, textbook crystal of Sulfur on one end, that is surrounded by smaller Sulfur crystals of equal quality, sitting on matrix. The main Sulfur measures 1.3 cm at its longest dimension and very gemmy when backlit. Mo major damage that I can find with the naked eye, but there are some small nicks / contacts in places.. A really showy and excellent quality display specimen of what are the most famous Sulfur crystals in the world. Priced at $1,750 in the inventory. For reference, this species should be spelled S-U-L-F-U-R (not sulphur) as both the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry along with the British Royal Society of Chemistry adopted this spelling in the 1990s (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfur#Spelling_and_etymology). Wikipedia also states that, "Sulfur is derived from the Latin word sulpur, which was Hellenized to sulphur in the erroneous belief that the Latin word came from Greek." From the collection of Vasco Trancoso, a medical doctor and prominent mineral collector from near Lisbon, Portugal (https://www.mindat.org/user-11954.html). He assembled his mineral collection over the course of 60 years, and built a fine worldwide display collection that we recently purchased. This piece is pictured on mindat.org at https://www.mindat.org/photo-185992.html
