Item Description

A superb and distinctive large crystallized copper from the famous Champion Mine. Out of all the Michigan coppers, this is really one of the few styles totally unique and recognizable to one specific mine. Fabulous, dentritic groupings of parallel-growth spinel-twinned copper crystals spring outward from a single long "backbone" of curved spinel-twinned copper. The feather like termination and lower sections of the piece with a striking "herringbone" pattern adds dramatic pizzazz. Unusually elegant in its presentation, this specimen can be viewed from more than one direction since it appears to be a floater. One side has a reddish cuprite tint, adding even more allure. This form of copper crystals was classified as Type I branching by Dana in 1886. The historic Champion Mine operated from 1902 to 1967 and this is probably an old-timer, as it is very high quality. This superlative specimen is on consignment from a private Michigan collection who gave it to us to auction for quick sale. Fairly valued at $4000-5000 based on other specimens of this classic and rare style on the market at shows, although they are NOT common.
