Item Description

Dating back to the 1800s, these Tetrahedrite/Chalcopyrite combinations are true classics from the world famous Herodsfoot Mine in Cornwall. Though Herodsfoot is best known for its outstanding "cogwheel" Bournonite specimens, the gorgeous crystals of Tetrahedrite coated by iridescent, golden Chalcopyrite are a close second. You can see on this specimen where the underlying, silvery-grey Tetrahedrite is exposed beneath the beautiful Chalcopyrite, particularly on the corners. The largest crystal is a full 1 cm on edge, and the Chalcopyrtite coating is remarkably uniform across this small cabinet specimen. This venerable and aesthetic combination piece well-represents this famous old locality, and they are seldom available. Please note that the matrix on this great old specimen has been partially stabilized - it would be a tragedy for the matrix and specimen to crumble away. Previously in the Miller collection from the 1800’s, after which it went to James B. Cone and the Wadsworth Atheneaum, and then to the Loomis Chaffee School. This is a very good, very beautiful, superb by modern standards display specimen> Valued $2500 although I have seen similar for sale with the larger English dealership at $5000-7500 for comparable.
