Item Description

Here we have an attractive specimen of Thomsenolite, a rare and unusual halide species is best known from Greenland, where the finest examples are found. This mineral dates back to 1868 and is named after Hans Peter Jorgen Julius Thomsen who has a chemistry professor at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. The habit of the crystals is actually monoclinic, though they look almost cubic. This is a classic specimen of this beloved and incredibly hard to find material from the type locality, the Ivigtut Cryolite Deposit in Greenland. The piece is loaded with excellent crystals on the display side with bright luster. If you collect rarities, or if you've ever wanted a piece of the interesting and unusual mineral, don't miss out on a chance to obtain a very nice well-crystallized example from this historic deposit. From the collection of William ("Bill") (1927-2006) and Anne (1928-2021) Cook of Cleveland, Ohio (#7863) - with an accompanying label from Claus Hedegaard of Faarvang, Denmark. This husband and wife duo were actively involved in the mineral world for many decades. Bill was a PhD geologist, and Anne was a mathematician, and they both were very serious mineral collectors. Bill served for many years as adjunct curator of mineralogy at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and Anne was inducted into the Micromounters' Hall of Fame on October 12, 2019. Both Bill and Anne, at various times, served as president both of the Mineralogical Society of Cleveland and of the Micromineral Society of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and Anne was inducted into the mi The rare barium lithium beryllium phosphate Wilancookite was named in their honor in 2015.
