Item Description
One of the premier Tourmaline localities in the world is the famous Pederneira Mine. This storied locality has produced some of the most colorful and iconic specimens of Tourmaline ever found. Virtually ever color has been seen within the Tourmaline crystals from this mine, and they remain some of the most sought after and valuable examples of the mineral extant. This specimen is a beautiful doubly-terminated crystal featuring a pyramidal termination with a gorgeous strong green hue that transitions into a classic vibrant reddish-pink "Rubellite" color throughout the rest of the prism. With backlighting, you can see there is a faint green coloring along the edges, creating the highly desirable "watermelon" effect for which Tourmaline is known. As mentioned, the crystal is doubly-terminated, as the base of the piece is re-crystallized ("re-healed") from where it detached from the pocket wall. It's also nearly a complete "floater", but there is a point of attachment on the back of the center portion of the prism where it was once intergrown with another Tourmaline, which is also re-crystallized, but not 100%. The termination is completely crystallized, with dozens of tiny faces all over, so I can't find any real damage of note anywhere. Please note that the piece is repaired, but expertly so, and it's not noticeable unless you look closely. If you collect gem crystals, Tourmalines or you just adore specimens from the Pederneira Mine, do not pass up this wonderful nearly 4-inch long crystal for a great price. We had a retail value of $4,000 on this one in our inventory. Specimen weight is 38.20 grams.
