Item Description

RARE man-made glass from the world's first atomic bomb explosion on July 16th, 1945. The sand and other matter in the earth were almost instantly fused into this glassy material. The exploded gas bubbles, green color and luster add pizzazz to the front and sides of the piece. The same thing happens upon a meteorite impact, hence the similarity to a tektite. With access to the Trinity Site highly restricted today, trinitite is thus very uncommon, to say the least. Some specimens were available in the 1960s from commercial scientific supply companies, such as this RARE example in a 15.7 x 13.2 cm glass-front Riker box. From an East Coast collection we purchased.
