Item Description

Power's Farm tourmaline specimens from this historic old New York locale are a US classic. A jackstraw jumble of splendent, jet-black, trigonal tourmaline crystals (some with striking striated faces) is nicely set on the granular tourmaline matrix. The tourmalines reach 3.0 cm. Periphery wear is noted, but has minimal impact to the quality of this excellent old-timer. The black tourmaline from this locality was historically called schorl and then iron-rich uvite. However, when the published rules of the recent IMA tourmaline nomenclature committee are followed, the correct species is dravite or uvite, often compositionally zoned with both species present in a single crystal. See: Chamberlain & Robinson (2013) Collector's Guide to the Minerals of New York State, Schiffer Books; and http://www.mindat.org/forum.php?read,7,364076,364076#msg-364076 (MINDAT). Classic and desirable old-time New York material from the David Burgess Collection.
