Item Description

Wavellite is a well-known aluminum phosphate species, which was named in 1805 in honor of Dr. William Wavell, and English scientist. For the past 200+ years, Wavellite has been found in a wide range of colors from many world localities. With that said, it's important to note that some of the finest specimens in terms of quality and COLOR are the famed examples found in localities around Avant, Arkansas. This piece is a great thumbnail featuring a 1.1 cm, rich blue-green colored radiating aggregate of Wavellite on Novaculite matrix. The color is good for the species, not just from Avant, but anywhere My favorite aspect of the piece is that the Wavellite sphere is COMPLETE and unbroken, which is significant as many times, the Wavellites from this locality can be unfortunately contacted or simply broken. Rarely does one see a complete, isolated "ball" on a specimen like this. Classic material, and certainly some of the most beloved Wavellite in the world for color.
From the collection of David E Ziga, a geologist who graduated Miami (of Ohio) University in 2017, with a mineralogy background.
