Item Description

When most people think of Wavellite from Arkansas, the color that comes to mind immediately is green, but this piece is distinctly YELLOW. While yellow is not necessarily a rare color for Wavellite, it is notably hard to find from any locality in Arkansas. This piece features a central vug filled with attractive, radial groups of yellow Wavellite measuring up to 6 mm across, sitting on host rock matrix. While the periphery is contacted, my favorite aspect of the piece is that the central spheres are complete and not contacted, which is fairly uncommon for this material. You'll see a lot of incomplete and just plain broken spheres of Wavellite from the various localities in Arkansas, so when you find a piece like this with undamaged "balls", it means something. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
