Item Description

The name Zircon comes from either from the Syriac zargono, from the Arabic word zarqun, meaning vermilion, or from the Persian zargun, meaning golden-colored. These words are combined into "jargoon", a term applied to light-colored Zircons. The English word Zircon is derived from the German "Zirkon," an adaptation of these previous words. Yellow Zircon is sometimes called "hyacinth" in allusion the flower. Apparently during the the Middle Ages, all yellow stones of East Indian origin were called hyacinth, but today this term is restricted to the yellow Zircons. This particular stone has a gorgeous saturated orange color with a notable pinkish overtone. If this were a Sapphire, I could easily see some people labeling it as having the highly desirable "Padparadscha" hue. The gem is only very slightly included, and the color is excllent, especially in a stone this size. The stone has a superb "Brilliant Oval" cut and really helps the color come out. Please note that due to the birefringence of Zironc, the photo makes the gem look somewhat "fuzzy", but it's much better in person. These gems have been coming out for several years now, but they are still such diverse gems and NOT easy to find in this size and color. Any gem quality Zircon over 4 carats is significant, especially if it's lighter in color and doesn't look "black" when you view it. This would be a great gem for a pendant or to add to a Zircon suite. Priced at $712.50 high retail.
