Item Description

A beautiful example of the rare carbonate Dawsonite from the famous locality at Limoncino. The species was named in 1874 after Sir John William Dawson of McGill University in Canada, who first collected the mineral. Gorgeous radiating "balls" comprising needle-thin acicular crystals of Dawsonite can be seen on the display side of the specimen. The Dawsonites show a rarely seen PINK color, which I read was due to the presence of chromium. Keep in mind that most Dawsonite is white, so this rare and eye-catching hue is a real treat. A hard to find specimen of this classic and beautifully colored material from Italy. From the collection of Brian Kosnar.
